How Local Businesses Are Coping With Covid-19

Covid 19 Small Businesses

This is an unprecedented time in history! Covid-19 has swept the globe, leaving in its path countless lives lost, economies weak at its knees, spreading fear and uncertainty for businesses and consumers, and yet, we still don’t know where this is all heading.

We’ve all been exposed to so much media coverage over the last couple of months, and I really wanted to start hearing some positive stories and how everyone’s coping in business with strategies for sustainability during this time. So, I decided to reach out to my networks and find out from other businesses how they have been impacted and any contingency plans for Covid-19.

Here’s what some local businesses had to say;

‘We have implemented a WFH policy very quickly in our US office and last week in our AU office. Operationally, we already have and routinely use many of the tools required for people to work remotely, specifically things like Miro for workshops, InVision, abstract and various others for sharing work, we’re using a combination of LifeSize, Zoom and Hangouts for video meetings, stand ups etc.’ Tony (Software)

“We continue to push forward, it’s not a time for us to slow down but to put our foot to the floor. Our staff are currently working from home this week as a test for a contingency plan. We are using Google Hangouts and FaceTime for meetings and we keep in contact regularly via email and phone. Our systems are all built in the cloud which has been a blessing for us.” Justin (Recruitment)

“Yes, I have been affected as a few of my clients have decided to stop running advertising. However, on the other hand my e-commerce clients are seeing greater results.” Kelsey (Online Marketing)

“We have cancelled or postponed a lot of our travel, both domestic and international, and a number of the conferences we were attending, speaking at, and running are being moved online or postponed. We are looking at licensing technology which will help with easing the Covid-19 burden, and this is forming part of our business strategy.” Grace (Private Equity)

“We are currently still working at our office and implemented social distancing in the workplace as much as possible, we have a contingency plan for working from home. Sales has seen a drop this last quarter and particularly the last few weeks. We are working on strategies to develop our sales funnel and penetrate other untapped areas of the market.” Phillip (Cosmetics)

From the digital world from us we are yet to feel the full impact of Covid-19. Video marketing and photography has slowed for some of our partners, although graphic design has been steaming ahead. We have seen an increase in start-up businesses over the last few weeks through logo package designs and social media setup.

Australian’s are a resilient bunch, we are driven and we’ll keep pushing forward, if we stick together and rally behind local businesses and the community. It’s times like today we all need a bit of inspiration.

So, here’s my favourite quotes from Warren Buffett;

“Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.”

“It’s only when the tide goes out that you discover who’s been swimming naked.”

“We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.”
